So, I come in to work this morning to find an article on games.internode about CCP bringing on an economist. Not a big surprise, it's not the first time I've heard them having an economist floating around the offices. Each month that goes by the writing on the wall is getting bigger and in snazzier colours. People in the industry seem to be waking up to the fact that there is something powerful in 'game economies'.
I for one am glad to see it. I'll leave this discussion at that, least I become pedantic on game economics.

I think you may be mis-reading this a bit. As I understand it, Eve as a business entity monetizes by subscriptions, so the economists task is to provide the sort of proscriptive, planned economics that prevent unwanted use of the system (a.k.a. "abuse") - this is not somebody hired to analyze data for the purpose of improving the economy in a bottom up sense of the word. By analogy, there's libertarian economics and statis economics, and CCP is most certainly going for the latter by nature of their business model, and to a lesser extent, game design.
